Bhutan’s altitude ranges from a mere 300 meters (1,000 feet) in the lowlands to a breathtaking 7,000 meters (22,000 feet) in the Himalayan plateau. This diverse topography is home to an array of flora and fauna. In the tropical hills, you might spot deer, lions, leopards, and the rare golden monkey. Meanwhile, the temperate Inner Himalayas are rich in deciduous forests and inhabited by bears, boars, and sambar deer.

Thimphu: The Heart of Bhutan

Bhutan’s capital, Thimphu, sits at over 2,400 meters (8,000 feet) in a fertile valley. Unlike typical capitals, Thimphu feels like a sprawling village, offering a unique blend of tradition and modernity. Wander through its streets to experience Bhutanese culture up close.

In 1865, Bhutan signed the Treaty of Sinchulu with Britain, ceding some border land in exchange for an annual subsidy. By 1907, influenced by the British, Bhutan established a monarchy. Post-1947, after India gained independence, Bhutan’s foreign affairs were guided by its friendly neighbor.

Bhutan’s Way of Life

Bhutan is one of the smallest countries in the world, with an economy primarily based on agriculture and forestry. Over 90% of the population relies on subsistence farming and animal husbandry. The rugged mountains make infrastructure development challenging, but the serene landscapes more than compensate for it.
